Bridgestone Ribbon Cutting and Dedication

The Western Heights Board of Education is pleased to announce the opening of its newly constructed Bridgestone Intermediate School located at 1700 South Council Road in Oklahoma City.  A ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony will be held for the new Bridgestone School   on Thursday February 16, 2012 @ 6:00 p.m.   The public is invited;   a reception and tours of the new school will immediately follow the dedication ceremony.

The Bridgestone School was constructed with 17 million dollars provided by district patrons in a 2009 bond issue.   In a unique partnership with the Western Heights School District, the Bridgestone Corporation donated 20 acres of land for the school site which will house approximately 600 5th and 6th grade students.  In addition to providing land for the elementary school site, Bridgestone also bequeathed 40 acres of its adjoining Environmental Habitat to Western Heights for the purpose of supporting environmental science education for all students of the district and surrounding areas.

President of the Western Heights Board of Education remarked, “We are very excited about the prospect of realizing the new educational benefits and opportunities that the new Bridgestone School will bring to the patrons of the district.”   With the addition of the Bridgestone School, Western Heights will undergo a new school site configuration plan that will provide four elementary schools that are PreK thru 4th grade, Bridgestone as a 5th & 6th grade center, Western Heights Middle School that will serve 7th and 8th grade students, along with a new 9th grade Center and the High School which will serve 10th thru 12th graders.

Environmental Habitat

Bridgestone donated the environmental habitat to the district.  Over the past year, teams have worked clearing out and cleaning up the area.  Dedication will follow in the spring of 2012.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

Bridgestone Ground Breaking Ceremony was held on Tuesday, October 26, 2010.

With the Bridgestone Ceremony we begin the construction of our 7th school site at Western Heights, a development that is much needed and required as we are also proud to announce today that our district’s enrollment has grown by about 700 students since 2006 (165 this year alone).

In 2006 the board of education wisely adopted its progressive ten year plan building plan that included construction of two new larger elementary sites at John Glenn & Council Grove plus an additional Bridgestone Intermediate School at SW 15 & Council Road, and the 9th Grade Center at the HS.  We continue to be excited about the district’s growth prospects as our present enrollment trends indicate that the district is likely to grow another 250-300 students over the next two to three years.  In these very trying economic times this is very good news.

We were proud to have our 4th Grade Elementary Students in attendance.  This will be the 1st official class to walk the halls of the New Bridgestone Intermediate School.
