Strong Readers Act

Purpose:

The purpose of the Strong Readers Act is to ensure that progression from one grade to another is determined, in part, upon proficiency in reading, that school district board of education policies facilitate reading instruction and intervention services to address student reading needs, and that each student and his or her parent or legal guardian be informed of that student’s reading progress.

Legislation:

The Oklahoma Strong Readers Act aims to strengthen literacy, to facilitate reading instruction and intervention services to address student reading needs, and that each student and his or her parent or legal guardian be informed of that student’s reading progress.

Plan:

Western Heights Public Schools provides the best quality instruction for your students.  Each student enrolled in one of our elementary schools is monitored closely for reading difficulties and provided additional instruction if reading below grade level.  Students are given the Amira Assessment at the beginning, middle and end of the school year to determine reading abilities and monitor growth.  The Amira Assessment assists teachers in choosing appropriate level reading material and determining the best course of instruction for the student.

Screening:

Elementary students who are below the determined benchmark level on the Amira Assessment are given a Student Literacy Intervention Plan. This plan shows the areas of instruction the student will be working on and gives the student additional instruction and practice time with the teacher to ensure they reach grade level reading proficiency.
